Rome Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has announced his resignation after weeks of disputes in his governing coalition. He will submit his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella in the evening, Draghi told his cabinet on Thursday, according to his office. The coalition of “national unity” that supported his government no longer exists. This means that the conditions for continuing his work are no longer given.

On Thursday afternoon, the coalition of Italy’s prime minister still received a clear majority in a vote of confidence with 172 to 39 votes. But one of the largest governing parties, the left-wing Five Star Movement, abstained completely.

After hours of discussion, the stars decided on Wednesday evening not to vote on an economic stimulus package that is primarily intended to support families and companies in the current energy crisis.

The measures are costing the government around 26 billion euros. But the plans of the cabinet did not go far enough for the party around ex-Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, they had been demanding improvements for days.

Draghi, who has been in office since February 2021 and has since maneuvered Italy through the corona crisis and the start of the Ukraine war, has warned the governing parties several times in recent weeks to continue supporting the alliance. The regular legislature runs until spring 2023.

Immediately after the vote in Parliament, Draghi went to President Mattarella in the Quirinal Palace. This is where his political journey began a year and a half ago, when the previous government slid into crisis and Mattarella needed a savior in need.
