Government does not want to abolish widow’s pension – neither does spouse splitting

Berlin The federal government does not plan to abolish the so-called widow’s pension. A government spokeswoman said on Monday in Berlin that this was not provided for in the coalition agreement of the traffic light government made up of SPD, Greens and FDP. “The survivor’s pension is safe.” The economics Monika Schnitzer had pleaded for the abolition on Deutschlandfunk.

Rather, the pension contributions of a married couple should be divided equally between the two partners. The current regulations would prevent many women from returning to work.

A spokesman for the FDP-led Ministry of Finance said the abolition of spouse splitting could not be derived from the coalition agreement. SPD leader Lars Klingbeil has suggested that it be abolished for new marriages.

“In this way we would put an end to the antiquated tax model that favors the traditional distribution of roles between men and women.”
