Government dispute over German China policy flares up again

There is a dispute in the federal government about the right way to deal with China.

Berlin, Brussels Scenes almost like in the old days: One after the other, Mercedes boss Ola Källenius, BMW boss Oliver Zipse and Siemens boss Roland Busch shake the hand of the chairman of China’s powerful National Development and Reform Commission, Zheng Shanjie. Smiling, the men present the just signed declarations of intent to the cameras in the Federal Ministry of Economics. In the background are China’s Prime Minister Li Qiang and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and applaud.

The pictures of the German-Chinese government consultations in mid-June stand for what has been shown again and again in the background over the past few weeks. Scholz acknowledges that “China has changed” and that the German way of dealing with the leadership in Beijing must therefore also change. But he prefers to leave it at minor adjustments.
