Good news from BTK: Cars in Turkey are getting smarter!

The automotive industry continues to become electrified and smart day by day. However, until now, there was a limitation on access to various services and technologies used in such vehicles in our country. For this reason, the desired efficiency could not be obtained in the use of smart cars in our country. According to the latest information, BTK took a step back on the subject and gave the green light to such services.

BTK will allow the use of smart services in connected vehicles

According to Hürriyet’s news, the Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTK) took an important step towards the use of value-added services in connected vehicles, which it banned in 2018 due to data security concerns. The institution determined the conditions required for the related services and technologies to be put into use.

According to the conditions determined by the BTK, a “domestic SIM card” will be mandatory in order to use smart services in connected vehicles, and the data will be shared under the control and supervision of the institution. Here, drivers will have the opportunity to turn the data sharing traffic on and off via e-government.

The new regulation will pave the way for the use of technologies such as autonomous driving, which has become quite widespread recently, in Turkey. Apart from this, many electric and connected vehicles that cannot be sold in our country due to the fact that data sharing is not allowed and prohibited will also be able to enter the Turkish market.

Finally, let’s say that the ball is now in the car manufacturers. Companies have to get the necessary approvals by applying to the BTK. In case of approval by the Authority, the use of smart technologies in the relevant vehicles will be allowed. As of 2023, we will see such services on the roads.

If the BTK requirements are met, many technologies such as the following can be used in connected vehicles;

  • autonomous driving
  • Vehicle-specific internet
  • Vehicle-to-vehicle communication
  • Live road and weather
  • advanced navigation
  • Remote parking and control
  • Receive updates remotely
  • Service and maintenance tracking
  • Advanced security systems
  • In connected vehicles
