Berlin, Dusseldorf The federal government and the EU Commission are trying hard to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas. In the short term, however, imports from Siberia will not be able to be fully compensated for if deliveries are canceled due to the war in Ukraine.

Just 40 percent of European natural gas demand can be covered even if all available liquefied natural gas terminals are fully utilized. This is shown by an evaluation by the market research company ICIS, which is exclusively available to the Handelsblatt.

Although it was already 29 percent in the comparatively mild February, Europe still had to cover 21 percent with gas imported from Russia via pipeline. Some of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) currently also comes from Russia.
