Berlin In view of delivery problems and production delays, the backlog of orders in German industry is growing. The number of orders rose by 0.5 percent from April to May, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.

Within a year, the cushion increased by 16.9 percent. “Disrupted supply chains as a result of the war in Ukraine and ongoing upheavals caused by the corona crisis, such as the closure of ports in China, continue to lead to problems in processing orders,” the statisticians explained.

As in the months before, the volume of incoming orders was higher than sales in many sectors in May. The reason for this excess demand may also be the “persistently high shortage of primary products”.

Domestic open orders increased 0.7 percent in May from April, and overseas orders backlog increased 0.3 percent. The order backlog of manufacturers of intermediate goods remained unchanged. For producers of capital goods, it rose by 0.4 percent. In the area of consumer goods, the cushion was 3.5 percent higher than in the previous month.

At 8.1 months, the backlog of orders in May remained at the April value and thus at the highest level since the beginning of the time series in 2015. The backlog for manufacturers of capital goods was even 11.9 months, for intermediate goods it was 4 .0 months and for consumer goods at 3.7 months.

This value indicates how many months the companies would theoretically have to produce with constant sales without new incoming orders in order to process the existing orders.
