From the city to the country: out into the suburbs

Dusseldorf Cities are attractive: short distances to work, the cultural and social offerings – all of this has attracted many people with above-average incomes to the metropolitan areas.

But this long-standing trend is changing in some regions: young families in particular can no longer afford city life and are moving to the country. The cost of living is cheaper there – this is especially true for rents.

In many cases, those who live deep in the provinces can only have a small income. Well-paid jobs are often not nearby, but living there is significantly cheaper than in the city.

The big cities like Berlin, Hamburg or Munich continue to attract many people. The commuter belts around the metropolises offer an alternative. Living here is cheaper – and the way to the theater or work is not that far.
