Beijing Thomas Berger* became an internet celebrity in China overnight. All it took was recording a dialogue. It is a conversation he had with an employee of the Chinese Health Department (CDC).

In the recording, the German defends himself against the arbitrary and chaotic treatment he received from the Chinese authorities in Shanghai.

Berger hit a nerve with his little protest. The soundtrack was shared millions of times within a few hours and he received a lot of support from Chinese internet users for his resistance. “This German spoke from the heart of everyone in Shanghai,” reads a comment below the audio file.

The 25 million inhabitants of the economic metropolis have been under a strict curfew for more than three weeks. The government had declared the lockdown in the name of the zero Covid strategy.
