Frankfurt Due to climate change, diseases that were otherwise only widespread in the tropics are increasingly coming to Europe and Germany. Virus carriers such as ticks and mosquitoes spread more rapidly when temperatures rise, and tropical species are becoming native to regions that used to be colder, the Robert Koch Institute reported in a new report in early June. This also includes the Asian tiger mosquito, which has already attracted attention as a carrier of the dengue virus and the tropical virus Chikungunya.
“This mosquito species is already native to southern Europe, and you can find it more and more frequently in Germany,” says tropical medicine specialist Kremsner. The virus can cause a rapidly rising high fever and severe joint and muscle pain and headaches, sometimes accompanied by a skin rash.
