Berlin For weeks, the traffic light parties have been arguing about Economics Minister Robert Habeck’s (Greens) plan for a gas surcharge. Now the instrument is on the brink of collapse. After Habeck had already expressed legal doubts about the project, Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) now also expressed economic concerns.

Lindner told the “Bild am Sonntag”: “The gas levy raises less the legal question and more the economic question.” With the gas levy you have an instrument that increases the price. “But we need a gas price brake that lowers the price,” emphasized the minister.

In the Handelsblatt, Lindner specified his initiative: “Until the gas price falls again, the state must build a bridge for consumers and the economy through this crisis.” The gas price brake must be about cushioning the price peaks on the gas market as a whole. This would also eliminate the need for various administratively complex auxiliary programs.
