No fears in Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia

The Russia-Ukraine war was making room for problems that would result in great destruction for humanity. Last night, the Russian army began firing on Zaporizhzhia, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, from all directions. Eyewitnesses in the surrounding stated that smoke came out of the facility. With the start of the fires during the war, we came to the brink of a great disaster. For a while, there was no news from the nuclear facility.

Then a Ukrainian government spokesperson confirmed that the fire broke out. In the event of a possible explosion, it was stated that there would be at least 10 times greater destruction compared to Chernobyl, one of the world’s biggest nuclear disasters. During the war, the government official appealed to Russia for the Russians to immediately withdraw and allow firefighters.

After all these calls, the Russian army withdrew shortly after. Firefighters quickly reached the scene. Government officials also went to the scene and examined the situation. A government official shared the frightening news, saying that high levels of radiation were first detected near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Although these words of the government official scared the whole world momentarily, there was comforting news from the nuclear power plant operator Energoatom. The facility official said that there was no change in the radiation level around Zaporizhzhia, and that the fire did not cause devastating damage to the operating reactors. It was stated that the fire started in a nearby education building.

Nuclear power plant operator Energoatom stated that in the first days of the war, two of the plant’s six reactors were shut down. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also made a statement on the subject. The IAEA confirmed that essential equipment was not damaged, thanks to the precautions taken by plant personnel during the war.
