Ferrari and McLaren with record prices

McLaren F1

The British athlete was the most expensive car of the year in 2021.

Bochum British and Italian sports cars continued to dominate the list of top-selling vehicles at auction in 2020. The strongest brand was once again Ferrari with five models in the top 10.

The absolute front runner was a 1995 McLaren F1, which in summer at the auction in Pebble Beach a price of $ 20.5 million (equivalent to 18.16 million euros) achieved, as the classic car analysts from Classic Analytics in Bochum have determined.

The high price results on the one hand from the rarity – only 64 vehicles have been built – and on the other hand from the odometer reading of only 390 kilometers and the special brown paintwork.

One follows at a considerable distance 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizionewhich found a new owner at the same auction for $ 10.8 million. The model not only has a racing history behind it, but was also only produced very rarely. Only 50 copies of the model were built in total

Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione

The noble Italian from 1959 found a new owner in 2021 for 10.8 million dollars.

One follows in third place Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato from 1962 at $ 9.5 million. The Briton also has Italian influences: it was built in collaboration with the Zagato body shop in Milan. A total of only 19 examples of the exceptionally elegant roadster were made. The model wasn’t even particularly popular when it premiered and had to be sold at a discount. Today the car, the outer shell of which was made of aluminum, is one of the most expensive classic cars in the world.

Matra MS 670

The Frenchman with a racetrack history is not only fast, but also rare.

One came under the hammer in 2021 Matra MS670 from 1972, whose buyer in Paris won the bid for 6.9 million euros (around 7.8 million dollars). The legendary V12 racing car with the number 001 won the Le Mans 24-hour race and its racing configuration was extremely popular with collectors.

The beautiful British roadster would be too expensive even for James Bond.

Also the Ferrari 268 SP went out in 1964 at the start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with chassis number 0798 – but retired shortly before the end with an engine failure. One of five surviving models was made in Monterey for a whopping $ 7.7 million handed over to a new owner. In particular, the eye-catching shark-mouth body from Fantuzzi with its capped windshield and flat rear is considered a model for later Ferraris.

The red Italian with a racing past is in demand with collectors.

And that too Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione looks back on a glorious Le Mans past. In 1967 the model won. GTB stands for Grand Turismo Berlinetta. The V12 engine with 320 hp and the body made of aluminum and fiberglass made the Italian model race particularly dynamically on the racetrack. At the Monterey Car Week in August it was also for around $ 7.7 million sold.

Some classic cars from Jean Guikas’s legendary collection went under the hammer in 2021 for a total of over 50 million euros. One of the most expensive models was that Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizionethat for around six million euros (about $ 6.6 million) changed hands. Because the legendary racing Ferrari from the early 1960s is expensive even as a replica. In its racing version, it is a real rarity.

Strictly speaking it is McLaren MP4-25A F1 not a classic car at all. It was built in 2010 and is still much too young for that. In 2021, it was still one of the most expensive cars to go under the hammer at auction. Sotheby’s sold the model for € 5.6 million (about $ 6.3 million). Because with this McLaren with chassis number 1, Lewis Hamilton raced through Formula 1 in 2010. He only became world champion later. But that apparently didn’t detract from the price of the model.

The Jaguar D-Type in 1955 built, only three of them were red. But not its rarity make the model that will be around for 2021 six million dollars was auctioned off, so valuable. A certain celebrity factor also adds to the price. The model was once sold by a car dealer named Bernie Ecclestone, who later rose to become legendary Formula 1 boss. In the 1980s it was long owned by Peter Grant, manager of the Led Zeppelin band.

The unusual Jaguar with a celebrity factor was extremely popular with collectors.

The tenth place of the most expensive cars came in 2021 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta Tour de France from 1958. The name recalls a time when the Tour de France was also driven by cars. The abbreviation LWB stands for Long Wheelbase. The copy that is sold is therefore particularly rare – which makes the price incredible six million dollars drove.

The most important event for exclusive vintage cars was the Monterey Auction Week in Pebble Beach, where six of the ten most expensive vehicles changed hands. The total amount from the top 10 vehicle auctions is almost 50 percent year-on-year to $ 88.8 million.
