Berlin After the surprising resignation of co-leader Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, Left Party leader Janine Wissler wants to continue running the party alone for the time being. This was announced by a party spokesman after a crisis meeting of the federal executive board late Wednesday evening of the German Press Agency. Wissler accepted a corresponding request from the federal executive board.

The federal executive committee of the left met on Wednesday evening for digital consultations. The crisis meeting was originally scheduled because of the allegations that became known at Easter that there had been sexual assaults within the party. The news magazine “Der Spiegel” had reported on suspected cases in the ranks of the Hessian left.

Now the online session was also about Hennig-Wellsow’s withdrawal, which was completely unexpected for the party, said a spokesman. You will not attend the meeting yourself. Wissler initially did not comment on her partner’s withdrawal. According to a spokesman, she was also surprised by the decision.

Hennig-Wellsow announced her resignation as Left Party leader at noon, citing both political and private reasons. But she also critically mentioned her party’s handling of sexism. There were “blatant deficits” here, Hennig-Wellsow wrote on her website.

She sees a “nationwide problem” in the suspected cases, as federal spokeswoman Sarah Dubiel told the German Press Agency at noon. Since Friday, the organization has spoken to “more than 30 other people affected”. There are “new reports coming in all the time”.
