In a new cyber attack that raises concerns about the security of high-profile social media accounts, the official Twitter account previously associated with American rapper Nelly has been compromised. The hacker behind the breach used the rapper’s profile for nefarious purposes. He also attempted to lure unsuspecting victims to a cryptocurrency phishing site. The incident was first uncovered and reported by on-chain researcher ZachXBT. Here are the details…
Famous rapper’s account was stolen
The attacker changed Nelly’s profile. Moreover, he took advantage of the compromised account to pose as a security analyst for an organization called “Scam Sniffer,” a supposed web-based security solution. This was also pointed out in the biography of the compromised account. The bio reads, “On-chain security analyst. We help you catch scammers @realscamsniffer.” However, the profile has since been deleted or removed, and Twitter says the account no longer exists.
Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., commonly known by his stage name Nelly. He has a successful career in the music industry. He has released eight studio albums over the years and won numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards and nine Billboard Music Awards. The attack on Nelly’s Twitter account raised concern as it demonstrates the potential risks such breaches can pose for users on social media platforms. Hackers are increasingly targeting popular and large accounts, often to use them for malicious purposes such as spreading phishing schemes and scams.
Scammers were also sending messages to users
ZachXBT also detected two messages sent to individuals by the scammer, falsely claiming to be investigating the dangers of wallet verification on recipients’ addresses. This sinister trick was an attempt to trick users into signing malicious transactions, ultimately enabling the theft of their cryptocurrency assets. Scam Sniffer, a legitimate security solution, responded to the incident and confirmed ZachXBT’s findings. He also warned the public about the attack. In a statement on the X platform, they urged users to be careful and make sure they visit the official website scamsniffer.io to verify the authenticity of any communication.

As of now, Nelly representatives have not responded. She left many questions unanswered about the security measures implemented to protect high-profile accounts on social media platforms. This incident serves as a stark reminder that more caution is needed in the cryptocurrency space. It also emphasizes the importance of verifying the authenticity of any online communication. Cyber attacks, especially those related to BTC and altcoins, remain a common threat, and individuals and organizations should continue to be diligent in protecting their cryptocurrencies and online identities.
