Facebook Reveals Behind the Scenes of Hours-Long Outage

The 8-hour interruptions in all services of the social media monopoly, especially WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook main applications, came to an end. Facebook explained the behind the scenes of the events with a new article it shared on its engineering blog.

Facebook’s historical collapse opened the door to long discussions. It wasn’t just users who had problems with WhatsApp and Instagram being cut. A whole industry with a business model connected to Facebook infrastructure was shaken. Behind the scenes of this outage, which swept through “alternative” channels such as Twitter, it seems likely that large companies will reconsider their engineering teams and work.

The Facebook team apologized again in the blog post it published, as it was during the outages, and said, “Because the systems it uses in its daily operations were also damaged, it prevented the problem from being diagnosed quickly.”

Facebook explained the reason for the problems:

Our engineering team found that a structural change in backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers was causing issues that interrupted communication between centers. This interruption in network traffic gradually affected the communication between our data centers, causing our services to stop.

Our services are now accessible again and we are actively working to get them back to full normalcy. We would like to clarify once again that we believe the root cause of this outage is an incorrect configuration change. We also have no evidence of user data breaches during our downtime.

People and businesses around the world rely on us every day to connect. We are aware of our responsibility to inform the public about the impact such situations have on people’s lives and disruptions to our services. We apologize to all those affected. In order to make our infrastructure more resilient, we are working to learn more about what is happening today.
