The USA have described the order for Russian troops to be deployed in the embattled east of Ukraine as the first step towards a full invasion. “Furthermore, this move by President Putin is clearly the basis for Russia’s attempt to create a pretext for another invasion of Ukraine,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at a late-breaking emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York York on Monday evening (local time). Putin “tore to pieces” the Minsk agreement with his recognition of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

He dreams of a Russian empire, said Thomas-Greenfield. “Putin wants the world to go back in time, to before the United Nations, to a time when empires ruled the world – but the rest of the world has moved forward. It’s not 1919, it’s 2022.” History teaches that the countries of the world should not look the other way in such a situation. It is an attack on every UN member state. The ambassador announced serious consequences for Moscow.
