According to insiders, former US Vice President Mike Pence wants to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination next Wednesday. The former government companion of President Donald Trump will start his entry into the race with a video and a speech in the state of Iowa, two people familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency on Wednesday. A statement from Pence was initially not available.

Arch-conservative Pence has increasingly distanced himself from his former boss. The latter had expressed anger at Pence’s refusal to support his action against the result of the 2020 presidential election.

With Pence, six candidates on the Republican side have now announced or formally submitted their candidacy for the November 2024 vote. Trump has a significant lead in polls: In RealClearPolitics he was recently at 53 percent among Republicans and Pence under four percent.
