Euro inflation at record high – what can the ECB do?

Dusseldorf The European Central Bank (ECB) once again missed its medium-term inflation target of two percent in March. The inflation rate of 7.5 percent was also significantly higher than expected. Experts surveyed by the Reuters news agency had expected 6.6 percent. The ECB is currently still practicing appeasement. Inflation will fall significantly next year and return to an average level of 2.1 percent.

ECB President Christine Lagarde admitted, however, that inflation dynamics like before the pandemic are unlikely to be achieved for the time being. Experts are now calling on the ECB to act quickly. The next rate meeting will take place on April 14th. Then reactions are expected. But how realistic is the hope of interest rate moves to combat inflation? Handelsblatt correspondent Frank Wiebe gives an outlook.
