Berlin, Brussels In response to the alleged atrocities committed by the Russian military in Ukraine, EU countries are preparing to tighten sanctions. These could also affect Russian energy supplies for the first time. “The hope is that the pictures from Ukraine will make Germany change its mind,” an EU diplomat told Handelsblatt.

A freeze on energy imports from Russia has been discussed for weeks. So far, the federal government has rejected an immediate embargo on gas and oil supplies from Russia and is supported in this position by Austria and Hungary.

A compromise that is considered increasingly likely would be to first impose a Europe-wide import ban on Russian hard coal, as the Handelsblatt learned in EU circles. The Commission could present a corresponding proposal to the Member States as early as Wednesday.
