The rules that will come with the EU artificial intelligence law

A new press release was issued by the European Union Parliament today. The articles of the agreement reached here were announced. Accordingly, the use of artificial intelligence for the following purposes has been completely banned in the European Union.

  • Biometric classification systems that use sensitive characteristics (e.g. political, religious, philosophical beliefs, race)
  • from the internet or security to create facial recognition databases. Using facial images from camera images
  • Emotion recognition in the workplace and educational institutions; social scores based on social behavior or personal characteristics
  • Taking advantage of people’s vulnerabilities (due to their age, disability, social or economic situation).

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence assistant Grok will be neutral!

Elon Musk, who introduced his artificial intelligence assistant named Grok in the past weeks, announced that it will be neutralized on political issues.

The European Parliament is introducing mandatory ground rules that could apply to the insurance and banking sectors, among other AI rules. Artificial intelligence systems used to influence election results and voter behavior are also classified as high risk, the parliament said.

In this way, citizens will be able to request an explanation from the companies that develop or are responsible for running the relevant artificial intelligence when they encounter any situation or problem. Artificial intelligence law penalties will lead to fines ranging from 1.5 percent to 7 percent of global turnover, up to 35 million euros or 7.5 million euros, depending on the violation and the size of the company.

The law agreed upon today will come into force gradually after its adoption. Six months are allowed for the rules regarding prohibited use cases to come into force. A period of 12 months will be allowed for transparency and governance requirements and 24 months for all other requirements. However, the implementation of the European Union’s artificial intelligence law may take until 2026.

Carme Artigas, Spain’s foreign minister responsible for digital and artificial intelligence issues, evaluated the agreement on the intensely discussed file as the biggest milestone in history. He proposed the use of digital information in Europe for both the EU and the world.

At the press conference he held after midnight to approve the political agreement, he said: “We achieved the first international regulation on artificial intelligence in the world. We are so proud.”
