Berlin Turkey no longer wants to be called “Turkey”. In a letter to the United Nations, the government claimed that in future it would only be called “Turkiye” in all languages – that is the country’s own Turkish designation. Instead of Turkey, Turkey or Turquie, the country should only be referred to as Türkiye in all languages, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan instructed the authorities by decree.
The campaign harks back to the old grief of Turks that ‘Turkey’ in English slang means ‘fool’ or ‘fap’ in addition to ‘turkey’; How Ankara intends to enforce this internationally remains unclear.
