Dusseldorf The turbulence on the global energy markets is driving up the annual costs for private energy consumers by several hundred euros. In 2021 the prices for electricity, gas and heating oil rose faster than ever before – and at the turn of the year, millions of customers will have to accept further price increases.

Since the beginning of the year, the average consumer price for electricity has risen by 18.4 percent. If a model household with an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours (KWh) had to pay 1171 euros at the beginning of the year, it was 1386 euros in December. This means that electricity for such a representative household has increased in price by 215 euros per year.

This results in an evaluation of the consumer portal Verivox for the Handelsblatt. And at the turn of the year it will be even more expensive. For January and February 2022, 280 of the around 800 regional electricity suppliers in Germany have announced electricity increases averaging 7.6 percent. For the representative household, this means additional costs of around 98 euros per year.
