Energy costs for landlords: Housing companies want government help

Berlin Not only the tenants, but also the landlords are struggling with the sharp rise in gas prices. The reason for this is a law intended to protect tenants from surprises. According to this, the landlord may not simply increase the estimated additional costs on his own initiative, but only after he has made the annual statement. If the advance payments were underestimated and the actual costs are higher, he must first advance the additional costs.

But what gives tenants the opportunity to prepare for the higher costs and put money aside in the current gas price crisis is causing problems for many owners of rented apartments – private and commercial.

“Many landlords bring the high advance payments to the limit of what is possible or even beyond,” said Kai Warnecke, President of Haus & Grund, the Handelsblatt. The association represents private landlords in Germany, who, according to the organization, make up around two-thirds of all rental apartments in Germany.
