Adam Back published his first correspondence with Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto in the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA vs. He presented it to a court in England as part of his testimony in the Craig Wright case. Back is testifying against Wright, who claims to be the creator of Bitcoin and wants to claim copyright over the Bitcoin whitepaper and related materials.
COPA stated that Wright’s claim “stalls the development of Bitcoin and intimidates and silences developers.” According to the group, this makes the outcome a matter of public interest and the security of Bitcoin developers.

In an email, Nakamoto acknowledged Back’s Bitcoin precursor Hashcash, writing:
I’m getting ready to publish a whitepaper referencing your Hashcash whitepaper and wanted to make sure I got the description right.
Nakamoto is referring to what would eventually become Bitcoin as a version of e-Cash, a technology offered by David Chaum’s DigiCash company as far back as 1998. In another email, Back suggests Nakamoto read a proposal by Wei Dai called B-Money. Nakamoto tells Back that he hasn’t read the B-Money web page. However, he states that he will cite the author in his article. By the way, B-Money was referenced in the last Bitcoin whitepaper.
Do the emails support Craig Wright’s claims?
This development is remarkable. Because Wright previously claimed that he was inspired by B-Money when creating Bitcoin. However, the email shows that Nakamoto was unaware of this until a few weeks before he launched Bitcoin. In his written witness statement, Back said the argument between him and Nakamoto was minimal. He also stated that he did not become interested in Bitcoin as a participant until years later.
“It wasn’t a detailed conversation,” Adam Back said. Also, we didn’t go into too much detail.” said. He also noted that he had never published the emails before.

During his testimony, Back highlighted contradictions based on the second witness statement that could support COPA’s case against Wright. Adam Back stated that he did not believe B-Money influenced Nakamoto based on his emails. He also disputed Wright’s claim that he belittled attempts to create digital currency. Additionally, Back rejected Wright’s claim that Bitcoin is based on an algorithm other than Hashcash. He also noted that his Hashcash v.0 is older than the alternative algorithm.
COPA’s lawsuit against Wright began on February 5. The case has gone through various stages since then. Wright maintained his stance. Moreover, he denied COPA’s allegations of forgery and plagiarism. Meanwhile, various COPA members and early Bitcoin participants who interacted with Nakamoto gave statements refuting Wright’s claim that he created Bitcoin.
