Stellantis: We need to reduce battery weights by half!

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares recently attended the Freedom of Mobility event. In his statement at the event, he stated that in order to make electrification more environmentally meaningful, it is necessary to lighten batteries by half in the next 10 years. However, it was emphasized that significant changes should be made in the weights of the cars.

Weight is very important in a car. Because we need to use lighter cars in order to achieve fuel economy or range economy for electric vehicles. However, the battery is a very heavy component and this is a disadvantage for electric cars. When extra weights are added, there is a serious decrease in range.

Continuing his statement, CEO Tavares also stated that the batteries in question bring an extra cost of 1000 pounds and a weight of 500 kilograms to an electric car that offers a range of 400 kilometers. However, emphasizing the importance of mitigation, the CEO also stated that this may be possible in the next 10 years.

There is another point to note here: Reducing battery weights by half also indicates a decrease in raw material usage. Because the 50 percent decrease in the battery pack also means a decrease in raw material usage compared to a conventional car. This is a very important move, especially in these times of lithium shortage.
