The US standard value index Dow Jones went 1.7 percent lower to 28,726 points from trading. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1.5 percent to 10,576 points and the broad-based S&P 500 fell 1.5 percent to 3,586 points.

The Dow lost a good eight percent in September. The widehe The combined S&P 500 closed the month down 9.3 percent. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was down 10.5 percent. For the S&P, it was the biggest September percentage drop in 20 years.
