Aachen In the world of family businesses, Zentis boss Karl-Heinz Johnen is a rarity: He is the second-generation managing director, but is not part of the founding family. His father was the first external person to take up the post, which now demands a lot from his son.
Because massive cost increases have hit the medium-sized company with its more than 2000 employees hard. “2022 was the most challenging year for Zentis since the post-war period. We are in the red,” says Johnen, describing the situation.
The fruits, which can still be smelled hundreds of meters away on the street in front of the factory, but also sugar and glasses have become significantly more expensive. The 62-year-old says that he has never experienced such price increases at Zentis in 40 years.
