Bonn Those who still rely on traditional letters in the digital age will have to pay a little more for mailing next year. The domestic postage for a standard letter weighing a maximum of 20 grams will increase by five cents to 85 cents on January 1st. A postcard costs 70 cents, which is ten cents more than before.

For a compact letter weighing a maximum of 50 grams, there is a postage surcharge of five cents on one euro. Other types of shipment are also becoming more expensive. Swiss Post justifies the new prices with falling shipment volumes and higher costs. The responsible regulatory authority, the Federal Network Agency, had given the green light for the new postage.

Old postage stamps do not become invalid, but you have to postage them additionally. If you don’t do this in the first few days of January and only send letters with the old stamps, you should be in luck. “We are accepting goodwill in the first few days of the new year and will not immediately send back the under-franked letters,” said a Post spokesman. This has already been done with the previous postage increases.

As a rule, Swiss Post twists postage prices every three years. The new price rates are valid until the end of 2024. The volume of letters has been falling for a long time in the Internet age because many people prefer to use emails, chat messages or posts on social media for communication.
