BRITAIN is set to be soaked by days of heavy rain and thunderstorms in a miserable week of “unsettled conditions”.
The Met Office said downpours could take a turn today with the ‘risk of thunder and hail’ likely in some areas.
Much of Britain will experience rainy weather by the middle of this week.
BBC Weather’s Carol Kirkwood warned of breezy winds and patchy showers that are expected to sweep across the UK for the first part of the week.
Carol Kirkwood said: “So we’ve got the rain to start with, moving away then the showers will be fairly prolific for a time.
“They’ll merge to give some longer spells of rain, some of them will be heavy and thunder, especially in the East and the South-East.
“But later in the day as that ridge builds in it will dry up out towards the West, but even though we are seeing showers, in between them today there equally will be spells of sunshine.
“The other thing is, it’s going to be quite a breezy day with temperatures 11C in the North, to about 18C in the South.”

With hot weather on the way over the coming days, the bookies have already cut odds from 5/1 to just 2/1 on next month playing host to the hottest June EVER.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “A record-breaking hot June will more than make up for what looks set to be a miserable end to May, and the odds suggest that’s exactly what we could have.”

Early June forecast
Over the weekend, fine and dry weather with clear and sunny spells expected for most, however some cloud and light showers remain possible, especially in the north and east.
Despite a chilly start on Saturday, near normal temperatures can be expected for most, perhaps feeling warmer in the south and southwest.
Into the following week, the weather is likely to become more settled, with any few showers most likely to be seen in the north and east, where it may feel fresher and cooler.
This means above average temperatures away from the north and east, with drier conditions expected for most.
As we move into the beginning of June, drier than average conditions are expected to persist overall.

Temperatures next week could exceed the current 2022 high of 27.5C, as Brits prepare to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at the start of June.
British Weather Services senior meteorologist Jim Dale said the heat could “ramp up”.
He said: “I think as we approach that weekend it might well ramp up… on the run into that weekend we might see something that’s a little bit warmer – maybe even very warm.”

Winds could reach gale-force in Scotland
In Scotland, the winds could reach gale-force speeds, with ground frost spotted in parts.
Mr McGivern told the Mirror: “Jet stream really revving up during the next couple of days pushing these features in from the Atlantic deepening some areas of low pressure to the north of the UK and making it fairly unseasonable for most of us.”
But it’s not all bad news, with warmer weather set to return ahead of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Three days of thunderstorms
Brits will be blasted by three days of thunderstorms and downpours as a “revved up jet stream” moves in from the Atlantic.
Sunseekers have so far basked in scorching May sunshine, with a roasting 27.5C marking the hottest day of the year so far.
But Brits are now being urged to unpack their umbrellas, as an unseasonable spring chill and three-days of rain is set to hit the UK.
Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said the week will bring “three days or so of rain, showers and a keen breeze especially on Wednesday and Thursday before the weather settles down for the weekend.”
Today will bring “lively showers” to much of the UK – along with hail and thunder.
And Wednesday will be no different, with “wet and windy weather” due to hit.

150mph Atlantic winds to batter the UK this week
In a strange event for this time of year, rapid and powerful winds from the North Atlantic are set to smash into Britain this week.

In an annoucment, the Met Office said: “A 150mph jet stream will cross the north Atlantic to bring an unseasonably windy spell to the UK midweek.
