Emmanuel Macron is currently visiting Pacific islands as a part of efforts to reassert french infuence in the region. On wednesday he visisted the French overseas territory of New Caledonia to address its relationship to France. In the Noumea accord of 1998, Paris vowed to gradually give the island more political power but voters rejected independence in all three referendums that have been organised since then. While the French President said he understands the disappointment, he warned more separatism could lead to violence.
