Master architect and engineer Gündüz Sait Güngen, who made great contributions to the realization of the Revolution automobile, passed away at the age of 99.
One of the most important scientists in the history of the Republic, Gündüz Sait GüngenHe died at the age of 99. Güngen, who had a very important career, was one of the creators of Turkey’s first domestic automobile project, Devrim. In fact, Gündüz Sait Güngen personally prepared the Revolution phrase on the front of the vehicle. at the last moment He placed it in the vehicle.
At the age of 19, he passed the Republic of Turkey State Railways (TCDD) scholarship exam. going to the USA Gündüz Sait Güngen returned to our country as a master architect and engineer. Güngen, who started working within TCDD in the first stage after returning to the country, Director General of Civil Aviation He even served as. The graduate engineer who also provided training during this period, like himself, To raise bright minds he tried.
He participated in the Revolution project upon the instructions of President Cemal Gürsel.
Gündüz Sait Güngen’s involvement in the Revolution project and the period itself President Cemal Gürsel It was initiated by. Güngen, who went to Eskişehir upon the instructions he received and started working, was working in the bodywork department of the automobile. Gündüz Sait Güngen produced Devrim, which was produced in 4 units. in 129 days He was recorded as one of the 22 engineers who brought it to life.
Speaking to Sözcü, Gündüz Sait Güngen’s daughter Lale Güngen Lighterexplained the process of the graduate engineer’s involvement in the Revolution with the following words:
In May 1961, Cemal Gürsel said, ‘Everyone is sending men to space, so do we have the technical competence to build our own automobile? ‘Look into this.’ Orhan Mersinli, the Minister of Transport at the time, thought that they could do this at the State Railways in terms of both education, technology and opportunities. Some say 750 thousand, some say 900 thousand… They started working with such an allowance to make the Revolution. At that time, there were 6 people in the architectural office of the State Railways. Since my father was teaching at METU at that time and during the exam period, he suggested that another friend of his go to Eskişehir. The first team starts working in Eskişehir. After 15 days, they tell my father ‘you should go too’, his exams are over and he joins the team in Eskişehir, 15 days late.
Even the name “Devrim” was revealed at the last minute
Lale Güngen Çakmak, her father’s involvement in the Devrim project and what happened afterwards He stated as follows:
When my father went to Eskişehir, he saw that the first team to go was examining vehicles produced by foreign countries. A very limited time was given to finish this vehicle. The plan is to run these cars at the racecourse on October 29th. And these people are coming together and trying to do this. ‘How can we make these cars in these 4 months?’ Then, as a method, they created negative molds suitable for the model. By pouring concrete into molds, they shaped the concrete smoothly. The name of the car was not known until the last moment. On October 10, it was reported that the name of the car was Devrim. And they will run the car on October 29th. My father designed the front emblem and the ‘Revolution’ text at the last minute, and then they completed this car. When he told us, he always said that the Devrim car was a successful project.
As Webtekno, we wish God’s mercy on Gündüz Sait Güngen, who passed away, and offer our condolences to his loved ones.
