Was that the “turnaround” in the election campaign that CSU boss Markus Söder (54) had conjured up for this weekend?

After the acclaimed entry of Armin Laschet (60, CDU) into the Nuremberg exhibition hall at the CSU party convention, Söder greeted the Union Chancellor candidate with a clear announcement: “Dear Armin, we want you to become Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.”

In a speech, Laschet flattered the CSU – and sharply attacked the SPD. In the end, he received a standing ovation for a good eight minutes.
