Cryptocurrency platform was attacked, two altcoins were stolen
Dealing a new and significant blow to the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, multi-chain trading platform Thunder Terminal fell victim to a major security breach that resulted in the loss of 86.5 Ethereum (ETH) and 439.1 Solana (SOL). The incident came to light when an attacker conducted a peer-to-peer (P2P) attack on Thunder Terminal, as reported by ZachXBT, revealing horrific details of an attack worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The attack on Thunder Terminal was revealed through information shared by on-chain detective ZachXBT, who issued an alert on December 27. According to ZachXBT’s findings, the attacker targeted the platform and initiated a P2P DeFi transfer of 86.5 Ethereum to ZK privacy protocol Railgun. The seriousness of the situation increased as reports had previously expressed suspicions that Thunder Terminal was facing a potential attack. Unsatisfied with the platform’s response, the attacker took to Blockchain to dispute Thunder’s claims, claiming that all user data was in his possession and offering to delete it for a fee of 50 ETH.

In response to the attack, Thunder Terminal issued statements defending the integrity of its security measures. The platform explained that the third-party service it uses was the likely target of the attack, affecting a relatively small portion of its user base. Thunder stated that only 114 of more than 14,000 addresses were affected, and user private key information remained safe.
Thunder Terminal’s quick response was evident as the attack was successfully stopped within a time frame of just 9 minutes. The platform assured users that their funds were safe and that a comprehensive compensation plan would be implemented immediately. Despite Thunder’s efforts to reassure its user base, the attacker persisted in claiming that the platform’s statements were “completely false.” He then threatened to delete all user data in exchange for a total of 50 ETH.

Following this security breach, Thunder Terminal took legal action and contacted both legal counsel and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Thunder reiterated its commitment to refund all affected users and restore confidence in the security of its ecosystem.
