Frankfurt It was a hacker attack that developed into a real robbery: During a cyber attack on the crypto service provider Nomad on Tuesday night, crypto currencies worth around 190 million US dollars (around 187 million euros) were stolen.
The so-called “Nomad Token Bridge”, a bridge between different blockchains, was affected. These bridges are used to allow users to exchange between different cryptocurrencies inexpensively.
In the first conspicuous transaction, a user is said to have stolen 2.3 million US dollars on Monday at 11:32 p.m. German time. Within a few hours, several hundred attackers withdrew almost all of the money from the blockchain bridge. At the end of the cyber attack, according to the industry service Defillama, only around 600 US dollars remained by Tuesday morning.
“There was a programming error in Nomad,” says David Fuhr, head of research at the Berlin IT consulting firm Hisolutions. “Numerous opportunists also took advantage of this and also participated in the looting,” says Fuhr.
