Conflict researcher Herfried Münkler: “A world order without guardians”

Dusseldorf While Russian troops continue to march towards the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and were recently accused of bombing a children’s and maternity hospital in the city of Mariupol, which caused horror around the world, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to defend the war of aggression with the self-declared goal of Wanting to “denazify” Ukraine. Both the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the entire western world see this as just an unfounded pretext for Putin to use all his might to impose his own political goals.

The war in Ukraine changed the world abruptly – Herfried Münkler knows that too. He is a historian, geopolitics expert and former professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

How is this war changing our world order? The historian is convinced: “A rule-based and value-based world order no longer works on a global scale.” Since the era of George W. Bush and Barack Obama as US Presidents, the USA could no longer be regarded as “guardians of the world order”. According to Münkler, the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan last summer was “the definitive farewell to this guardian role”.

Münkler is also convinced that the war in Ukraine will result in global nuclear armament. In the new episode of Handelsblatt Today, Münkler explains which international alliances could break and which ones could grow stronger than ever.
