Cold withdrawal of Russian gas: Germany is threatened with an emergency winter

If the gas runs out in Germany, it will be a cold winter.

  • Should Russia turn off the gas tap, the Federal Republic faces a hard winter. Consumers in particular are threatened with massive price increases for GAs.
  • But companies would also be hit hard. Institutes expect economic output to drop by between six and 12 percent if gas is no longer supplied.
  • In the search for solutions to the German energy disaster, it helps to look at other European countries. They want to bridge the shortage of Russian gas with more liquid gas and other strategies.

A state of emergency prevails in the production halls of the Essen-based family company Trimet. Since September last year, the production of the largest German aluminum manufacturer has been throttled – in the Hamburg plant to 75 percent of the possible output, at the Essen headquarters and in Voerde even by half.

Otherwise, the traditional company from the Ruhr area would no longer be able to pay its electricity costs. Because gas prices have increased electricity prices because part of the electricity is produced in gas-fired power plants.
