Munich China took its time over the weekend before the government in Beijing reacted to the West’s most recent attacks on the country’s chip industry. At the beginning of the week, Chinese companies would need an export license for the important semiconductor materials gallium and germanium.
Like you to me, like me to you: In the fight for semiconductors, America and its allies on the one hand and China on the other are overdoing each other with increasingly far-reaching punitive measures. Only at the end of last week did the Netherlands announce new export controls for ASML systems.
Europe’s most valuable tech group is a global leader in essential chip production processes. From September 1st, the Dutch mechanical engineering company will need an export license from the government for a much larger part of its product portfolio than before.
“We took this step in the interests of our national security,” said Trade Minister Liesje Schreinemacher. Because the machines could be used for military applications.
