The federal government has been arguing for months about the participation of the Chinese logistics group in a container terminal in the port of Hamburg.

Berlin The entry of the Chinese state shipping company Cosco at the Hamburg-Tollort container terminal, which was believed to be safe, could still tip over. The responsible Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) now classifies the terminal as a critical infrastructure. NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on this first.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Economics now told the Handelsblatt: “Since the conditions have changed, we are examining the effects on the facts.” The compromise made in the federal government about the entry could become void.

A heated argument broke out in the governing coalition last fall over the deal between Cosco and the operator of the Hamburg port, HHLA. Robert Habeck’s (Greens) Ministry of Economic Affairs, which was in charge, wanted to prevent the Chinese from entering, as did the other five specialist ministries. Politicians worried that China would have too much influence on German infrastructure.
