Berlin, Strasbourg The Chinese government has made a new attempt to ensnare Europe economically – and to detach the EU from its strategic ties to the USA and to pull it more strongly on China’s side. In confidential talks with EU diplomats, representatives of the People’s Republic have offered to lift sanctions against EU parliamentarians and critical scientists. Insiders report this to the Handelsblatt.

The aim of the offer is to revive the CAI investment agreement between China and the EU, which was agreed at the end of 2020 but never ratified. “China is ready to make concessions,” says Brussels. Specifically, it is about the fact that Beijing has announced that it will waive the sanctions imposed on EU parliamentarians, China experts and other affected parties in 2021.

The offer is part of an ongoing charm offensive against Paris and Berlin and can – at least from the Chinese point of view – be seen as a major concession to Europe.
