The Chinese Government has banned the purchase and use of US-origin Intel, AMD and Microsoft products in government computers. The new guidelines require most government agencies to opt for domestic alternatives such as Huawei.
China wants to use products of Chinese companies such as Huawei instead of products of US companies
In response to US restrictions on processor imports, China now bans the purchase of Intel, AMD and Microsoft products in government computers.
The Information Technology Security Evaluation Center of the People’s Republic of China has created a list of companies from which government agencies can purchase hardware and software, citing the transition to “secure and reliable” hardware and software. However, this list does not include world giant PC processor manufacturers such as Intel and AMD, nor a leading software company such as Microsoft. It seems that Chinese competitors such as Huawei are included in the list.
These guidelines were announced in December last year but were implemented as policy this week. All government agencies above the county level must comply with these standards. But the ban is not directed at consumers or companies.
This decision is expected to have minimal impact on Microsoft. But China accounts for billions of dollars in sales for both AMD and Intel. This will be a big change for both companies.
The US is trying to weaken China’s competition in the American artificial intelligence market by banning the sale of powerful CPUs and GPUs. It is also investing in domestic chip production to increase independence from manufacturing in Taiwan.
Share prices of Intel, AMD and Nvidia fell slightly following this decision. What are you thinking? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
