Salvador All Chileans have to go to the polls on Sunday. Voting is compulsory when they decide on the draft constitution. You can only accept or reject it. If the draft fails, the 1980 constitution will remain in force. This was introduced under the Pinochet dictatorship – which is why most Chileans wanted to reformulate their constitution.

But things don’t look good for the new charter: according to surveys, 48 percent reject the draft and only 38 percent want to vote for it. Both opponents and supporters try to strengthen their positions until the last moment. Former UN Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet supports the draft constitution. Bachelet was President of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018.
