Tel Aviv Iran’s regime had hoped the protests would subside after a few days. This time, however, the situation for the government is obviously really threatening: the young Iranian women cannot be stopped. Despite a nationwide internet ban, clips from Iran continue to reach the public.
You can see, for example, schoolgirls chasing representatives of the Iranian regime from their schoolyard and shouting “Death to the dictator”. On an overpass, young women wave their headscarves instead of wearing them, and are supported by car drivers who honk their horns loudly.
Waves of protest are nothing new in Iran. But the current unrest is about more than that: While the ayatollahs were primarily confronted with isolated demands in earlier demonstrations, the Iranian women are currently protesting for fundamental issues. They are demanding political rights, not just the abolition of the compulsory hijab. The protests are thus aimed directly at the Islamic Republic’s center of power.
