The number of corona infections in most of the country’s nine provinces is increasing sharply, but the number of deaths is not increasing as dramatically, and indicators such as the average length of hospital stays are encouraging. The strongly mutated omicron variant was first discovered in South Africa at the end of November. It is feared that not only could it be more contagious, but that the vaccines might be less effective against it.
