Bulgaria is coping so well with the Russian gas ban

Athens Imagine Russia turning off the gas, but no one notices. That’s how it is in Bulgaria at the moment. On April 27, the Russian state-owned company Gazprom stopped supplying natural gas to Bulgaria because the Bulgarian company Bulgargaz refused to pay the bills in rubles.

But although Bulgaria had obtained 90 percent of its gas from Russia up to that point, the supply freeze was not noticeable for private households and commercial customers. There are no supply bottlenecks or rationing. Bulgargaz customers can even hope to get lower gas bills in the future.

When Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov returned to Sofia this week from a working visit to Washington, he brought good news with him: Bulgaria is due to receive the first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the USA as early as June – at prices slightly below those from Gazprom, as Petkov reported after his meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris.
