Hamm On the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn (DB), rail freight boss Sigrid Nikutta is considering an almost complete exit from single wagon traffic, in which transport customers only book individual wagons instead of entire trains. The Handelsblatt learned this from the supervisory board of the state-owned company.
The railway subsidiary DB Cargo is deep in the red. In 2022 she made a loss of 655 million euros. This year, the minus should only be 225 million euros. But in order to be in the black again as planned in 2024, a mix of savings, better capacity utilization and further aid from the federal budget is planned.
But whether that’s enough is unclear. Therefore there is a plan B, reports European works council head Jörg Hensel. After that, up to 8,400 of a total of 30,000 employees could lose their jobs if the railways drastically reduced or gave up the expensive business with individual wagons.
