The contactless payment system continues to gain momentum in the post-pandemic period. So much so that it reached a volume twice that of last year, making the act of ‘touching’ in our daily shopping almost a thing of the past.

The amount of card payments made online reached 2.4 trillion TL in this period. If we make a rough calculation, the fact that more than 1 TL out of every 4 TL is spent on the internet proves that e-commerce is now an indispensable part.

The increase in the number of cards categorized as credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards brought double-digit increases in all card types. There was an increase of 18 percent in the number of credit cards, 12 percent in the number of debit cards and 26 percent in prepaid cards.

In the distribution of payment methods, 2023 was a year in which contactless payment had a significant share with 27 percent. While 37 percent of in-store payments are still made through contact methods, internet and mobile payments are closely followed by 36 percent.

When we take a look at last year’s Bests in the payment ecosystem, we see that the highest daily card payment volume was reached with 48.8 billion TL in New Year’s Eve shopping on December 29. The impact of cash withdrawals before Eid al-Fitr and Magnificent Friday discounts on online payments is also remarkable.
