In reference to the internet censorship debates, which do not fall on Turkey’s agenda, a bite was poured in Istanbul.
The limits of freedom on the internet in Turkey have been a subject of great debate in recent years. The recent ban on access to Ekşi Sözlük has brought these discussions back to the agenda. Organizations aiming to protect freedom on the Internet also against censorship on the internet takes initiatives and expresses their reactions.
One of these reactions was carried out by the Free Software Association the other day. Society, “In the spirit of internet freedom” in Istanbul Kadıköy square with the slogan he spilled a bite.
The association also made a press release during the distribution of bites:
Free Software Association made a press statement about internet censorship in Turkey while they were eating a bite. Some of the highlights from the press release were as follows:
“The institutionalization of censorship on the Internet was made possible by the enactment of Law No. 5651, also known as the ‘Internet Law’ in public, which has a significant impact on our lives today. With the enactment of this law, internet censorship has now become a part of daily censorship.
Thousands of websites were censored before the first year of the law was completed, on the pretext of issues such as copyright, especially insulting state bodies.
‘DisabledWeb’, where these websites are listed, was also censored in the current month.
(…) Bandwidth throttling, which has been used as a censorship tool for years, even though it suffers especially with the social media law, stands before us as a clear violation of net neutrality. Net neutrality is the equal treatment of data by service providers and governments.
Making shared data more difficult or easily accessible based on parameters such as publisher site and content is a violation of net neutrality.
(…) As we enter the 30th year, first of all, the bandwidth of Twitter, which is the only source of communication and coordination for many people during the earthquake disaster, was reduced at the expense of people’s lives, and then Ekşi Sözlük, which had to draw a black band over its logo for years, made useless excuses. The fact that it is censored and has to add to the domain name like TV series sites because it is still censored shows us where this mentality still stands.”
The association organizes all institutions and individuals with the ideal of free internet in Turkey during internet week. fight for free internet invited.
