Cologne The days when companies can pollute the environment for free are coming to an end. In the EU, for example, the operators of large power plants and industrial plants as well as the providers of intra-European flights have to buy carbon dioxide emission rights. The right to blow a tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air currently costs around 82 euros. Four years ago it was around 20 euros.
The price is formed in the European emissions trading system (EU ETS). Trading takes place on an exchange. The European Energy Exchange in Leipzig, for example, constantly sets new prices for CO2 emission allowances. This is how an index is created. It indicates how the price of CO2 changes over time. And as is so often the case, once an index exists, there are also financial products based on this index.
