James Dyson Award applications open
The James Dyson Award, a design competition run by the James Dyson Foundation and held annually for students and new graduates, is open for applications. The organization, which will accept competitors from Turkey for the first time this year, is waiting for the participation of young inventors.

The project, which was started to support young entrepreneurs and students, September will announce the winners. Winners will receive more than double the amount awarded in previous years for improving their inventions.
Since 2005, the James Dyson Award has been challenging entrepreneurial undergraduates and recent engineering and design graduates to “Design something that solves a problem.” In recent years, projects such as identifying plastic materials for recycling, preventing excessive blood loss in stab wounds and improving home medical diagnostics have been launched in the past years. The national winners are chosen by the local jury and the international winners by Sir James Dyson himself.
James Dyson Award winners are provided with substantial investment support and high-profile media visibility, creating the first significant career opportunity for inventors to apply their ideas to real life.
Sir James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer, said in his statement regarding the Award: “For me, the importance of the James Dyson Award is to solve a problem intelligently. It is very important that young inventors question and challenge things. I truly believe that young people want to change the world and I think they should be encouraged.
The future is their world. The award gives young inventors the confidence and space to pursue their ideas. 70 percent of our past international winners were able to commercialize their inventions. We are very excited that the award will be held in Turkey for the first time this year. I can’t wait to see radical and groundbreaking ideas. Good luck!” said.
What awaits the winners?
- Prize money. National winners receive prize money of up to £5,000 to take the next stage in the development of their invention, and international winners up to £30,000.
- Visibility in the media. When the James Dyson Award winners are announced, doors are opened to support product development and outreach. When visibility increases, winners receive more attention from the media, the public, and industry professionals.
- Support from past winners. This year, the award also launched a social network for those who commercialize their inventions. Events and opportunities have been created for past Prize winners to connect, share experiences and mentor among winners.
As part of the James Dyson Award, to which a record number of applications have been received in the last two years, three international winners have been selected for the first time in 2021, each with prize money of £30,000 each.
Each country and region participating in the competition will award one national winner (£5,000) and two national runners-up. National winners are selected by an independent jury in collaboration with a Dyson engineer. The award is held for the first time this year in Turkey and Thailand. Winners of the national award qualify for inclusion in the International Top 20 List, where James Dyson selects international winners, and to be considered internationally.
In the jury group for the Turkey leg of the James Dyson Award, METU EUTB and TMMOB Chamber of Architects Industrial Designers Commission President Prof. Dr. Gülay Hasdoğan is a journalist who also teaches Marketing Communication, Advertising and Digital Marketing courses at Istanbul Bilgi University. Fatoş Karahasan and a representative group that includes people who work as engineers at Dyson in different branches.

Past success stories
The award also provides international media visibility, giving young inventors greater investment and opportunities to develop their ideas. 2014 International winner, mOm incubators, an incubator that offers improved conditions for newborn care.
After successfully passing all independent tests, it is now used in three UK National Health Service investment trusts, and the invention has touched the lives of more than 20 children so far. In 2017, the US National runner-up SoaPen, a colored soap pen that promotes handwashing, commercialized its invention and was featured on the prestigious page of Forbes 30 Under 30 Names List.
SoaPen is now shipping its expanding product portfolio to the US, and most recently, it is also producing a hand sanitizer to meet demands during the Covid-19 outbreak. Rabbit Ray, the runner-up in Singapore in 2011, a communication tool designed for hospital staff to use when explaining medical procedures to children, is used by 44 hospitals in 23 countries. Its inventor, Esther Wang, founded Joytingle, an award-winning health education company, and the Rabbit Ray invention now supports medical procedure communication in fields from vaccines to chemotherapy.
