Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090, the RTX 4090 graphics card variant that offers the fastest increased clock speed out of the box. Of course, this card brings with it a first, as we have mentioned before. It’s liquid metal cooling.

So the card uses a liquid metal thermal compound. In addition to the RTX 4090 GPU, this graphics card, which has a specially produced cooling plate that captures the heat from VRMs and memory chips, comes with the claim of increasing clock speeds for a longer period of time.

Asus introduced its newest products in the consumer, corporate and gaming categories at Computex 2023, where it appeared after three years.

Liquid metal is a material that enables much lower temperatures compared to conventional thermal pastes. However, this material also has a very important disadvantage. It also conducts electricity. Therefore, there is a possibility of short-circuiting by contacting exposed components when not used properly. For this reason, end users generally avoid applying it themselves.

However, Asus, which has long used liquid metal in ROG laptops and has become an expert in this field, has managed to develop a special production process that allows to take advantage of the power of liquid metal while using the GPU vertically.

First, the surface-mounted capacitors around the GPU are coated with a UV resin. Two protective layers are then placed between the GPU and the main PCB. This allows the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 to benefit from the superior heat conduction properties of liquid metal without the risk of leakage.

Of course, while liquid metal is a great way to go, it’s only part of a comprehensive solution for such a high-performance graphics card to keep temperature and noise levels low. The card also has a very thick 360mm radiator and three ROG MF-12S ARGB fans supporting it.

These fans, which can be used with a daisy array, can be combined with magnetic connection points. These ports also transmit control signals and power. Since three fans are used with only one cable, users can easily avoid cable clutter.

In addition, it is possible to apply synchronized ARGB lighting effects. With high static pressure and airflow, these fans run at less than 1000 RPM, keeping the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 at 60°C under 450 watts TGP.

Most liquid-cooled graphics cards, including those using the ROG Strix LC series, require a fan on top of the card to keep surface-mount components cool, in addition to the fans attached to the radiator to keep GPU temperature under control.

However, the special cooling plate that completely covers the ROG Matrix RTX 4090 eliminates the need for this extra fan. Thanks to this plate, which contacts all the heat-generating components on the PCB, the radiator can cool the entire board by itself.

The stainless steel backplate keeps the card stable, whether it’s mounted vertically for the traditional or the show. ROG Matrix RTX 4090 has a single 12VHPWR cable. The power cable of the fans is hidden inside the main cooling tubes. This makes cable management very easy.

Finally, let’s talk about software. The one-of-a-kind hardware in the ROG Matrix RTX 4090 is supported by specially developed software functions. Most video cards have a temperature sensor on the graphics processor and memory. Thus, the system temperature can be basically monitored.

ROG takes this design even further with additional sensors added to the VRMs, chokes and power input circuits. The data collected from the sensors is used for the new Thermal Map feature in ASUS GPU Tweak III app.

Here you can see in detail how the card works in real time. The app also supports the Power Detector+ feature. This feature examines each of the six pins on the 12VHPWR cable and reports anything abnormal.

In case of a problem, the user can instantly know that he needs to replace the cable. ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 also has Mileage feature. This feature tracks the usage pattern of the card at different power levels.

Thus, users can control how the card works under load in different games. Additionally, the ROG Matrix RTX 4090 features Dual BIOS. Users can easily switch between Silent and Performance modes with this feature.
